Interview
An Ugly Lie - To survive, she became someone else. To keep her freedom, she must outwit the one person who knows who she truly is.
1787, Papal enclave, Provence: Fifteen-year-old Fredi Cosvèr is used to hiding—her Huguenot faith behind Catholic pretence, her sharp mind behind silence, and her love for Marie behind careful distance. With the arrival of a heretic-hunting priest, someone starts betraying Huguenots. When Marie loses her Huguenot cross at school, it places all the students under suspicion. Attempting to deflect suspicion from herself and Marie, Fredi lies to the priest, claiming she and Marie want to become nuns. But her brother, Bastien, is making dangerous bargains of his own, and Fredi begins to suspect that her greatest threat comes from the person she’s always trusted.
1792, Prussia: Fleeing persecution after her father’s murder, Fredi has reinvented herself. Disguised as a man, she trains as a royal court gardener—a profession forbidden to women. But Bastien has other plans. Either Fredi marries to secure the family’s finances, or he will commit her to an asylum for her “unnatural tendencies”. Suspecting that Bastien was the one who had betrayed the Huguenots back in Provence, Fredi races to uncover the truth and blackmail her way out of his schemes. But the truth is more devastating than any lie she’s ever told.
